Coinbase vs Bitso in Brazil: which one should you use?

Updated Sep 18, 2026Reviewed by Darren TsangFacts as of Sep 1, 2026
Quick answer

Bitso is the only one of the two that publishes a fee table denominated in reais — 0.400% taker at the entry tier, with Pix in and out at a stated zero fee. Coinbase suits you if you want one named Brazilian company on the contract and a BRL 1 entry point, accepting that its rate comes from a global schedule. Neither has a named Banco Central do Brasil authorisation confirmed in our data, so this page is editorial and carries no referral link.

Only one of them prices in reais

This is the most important difference here, and it is not about who charges less. Bitso's fee page carries a table for Brazilian-real markets with tiers measured in reais of volume: at the entry tier, below 541,000 BRL of volume, it lists 0.200% maker and 0.400% taker.

Coinbase Exchange's documentation describes a maker-taker model and says an order placed at the market price and filled immediately pays between 0.04% and 0.60%. That is a product range valid globally, not a Brazilian price.

So when you read 0.400% against 0.60%, you are comparing a table quoted in reais with a global one. The direction of the answer is useful, but the two measurements do not share a basis. Coinbase's full bill, across its three pricing modes, is in what Coinbase charges.

A table percentage is not the total cost. Compare the final price on both confirmation screens at the same moment, because spread and conversion sit outside the fee table.

Pix, in and out

Bitso's transaction-fee page lists PIX as both a Brazilian-real deposit and withdrawal method, with a stated fee amount of zero in each direction and deposits shown as taking under one minute.

Coinbase's payment-method table lists Pix and bank transfer for Brazilian customers, described as instant, with a minimum deposit of one real. The page publishes no fee amount for that movement.

In practice: Bitso states in writing that Pix costs nothing; Coinbase states that Pix exists and that BRL 1 gets you started, but does not publish the cost. Check the amount on screen before you confirm the transfer.

Which company you actually contract with

Coinbase's Brazil page states that on 1 September 2023 the company established Coinbase Brasil Ltda to serve all users residing in Brazil, and that the entity is based in Brazil with a valid CNPJ. That is a direct answer: one named company, for residents of Brazil.

On the Bitso side, our data carries two entities. Nvio Brasil Bitso Instituição de Pagamento Ltda. runs the Brazilian-real payment operations, and Bitso International is the entity attributed to the regional fee schedule. We did not verify which of them signs your contract for each product, so read the counterparty name in the terms shown when you open the account.

Either way the classification stays editorial only: no named authorisation under the Banco Central transition rules was confirmed against an official source for either provider.

Licences and transparency

Bitso's security page states that the company meets the applicable licensing requirements in the regions where it operates, and that it holds a Distributed Ledger Technology licence issued by the Gibraltar Financial Services Commission. That is a real licence, but from another jurisdiction, and it says nothing about Brazilian authorisation.

In our data Coinbase's transparency rests on disclosed licences and public-company reporting, also outside Brazil.

Checklist before you open an account

  1. Check which currency the fee table is quoted in before comparing percentages.
  2. Check the Pix fee on screen, on the way in and on the way out.
  3. Read the contracting entity name in the terms you accept.
  4. Quote the same order on both at the same moment and compare the final amount in reais.
  5. Check withdrawal limits and timing before your first deposit.
  6. Decide how much of your money you are willing to leave with one custodian.

FAQ

Does Bitso charge less than Coinbase? At the entry tier, Bitso's table shows 0.400% taker against Coinbase's up to 0.60%. But Bitso's is a reais table and Coinbase's is global, so quote the same order on both before treating that as guaranteed savings.

Is Pix free on both? Bitso states a zero fee for Pix deposits and withdrawals. Coinbase lists Pix but publishes no fee amount on the page we captured.

Does the Gibraltar licence apply in Brazil? No. It is a licence from another jurisdiction and does not substitute for a Banco Central do Brasil authorisation.

Which one for a first purchase? If you want the price quoted in reais and Pix with no fee, Bitso publishes both. If you want a single named Brazilian company on the contract and a BRL 1 entry point, Coinbase publishes both.

Verdict

Bitso if you want a price quoted in reais and Pix at a stated zero fee on both legs. Coinbase if you want a named Brazilian company on the contract and an entry point at BRL 1.

Both stay editorial only in our data, with no referral link, because neither has a named Banco Central authorisation confirmed. Compare the final cost of each in the exchange list and see where each one lands in which crypto exchange charges the lowest fees in Brazil.
